Sandra Kalas

The GVPL Friends of the Library hosted a wonderful presentation by Sandra Kalas who is also a Friends member.
Sandra toured as a nurse on the "Semester at Sea" passenger ship. This is a premier global study abroad program.  The college (and older) students experience global education through studies which explore themes, cultures, civilizations and disciplines both cross-culturally and globally.  Students can enroll for 9-12 semester credits or 4-5 credits for short-term voyages.
Sandra shared many of her experiences sailing around the world, twice! She stopped at many ports of call in Europe, Asia and South America.  She visited the Sphinx in Egypt; toured the Mayan, Inca  and Aztec ruins as well as sailing around  Cape Horn and Cape of Good Hope. She regaled us with many humorous tales as well as educational stories.

Sandra Kalas

Mrs. Kalas brought in many things from around the world such as hand made necklaces, woven material from Peru, beautiful silk from in India and a hand-made pipe from the Middle East.  Her powerpoint presentation was very informative and beautiful.
While enjoying refreshments,  Sandra sat and chatted with anyone in the audience who had further questions.

For more information, please look at the Semester At Sea's website: www.semesteratsea.org.

If you would like to attend or become a member/supporter of the Friends of the Library,
we meet the second Tuesday of each month at 1pm at the Library, unless otherwise noted.
Our annual dues are only $10. What a nice way to support our local library.
We hope to see you at our next meeting. :-)
